Instagram is no longer just a photo-sharing app

This just in: The future is video.

In an update posted to his IGTV, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram explained the changes coming to video on the platform and which features the company plans to focus on on the coming months. "We are no longer a photo-sharing app" he explains, "Video is driving an immense amount of growth online, and it's something I think we need to lean into more."

Let's be honest, Instagram has some stiff competition in terms of video. "TikTok is huge, YouTube is even bigger" Mosseri explains - and it sounds like Instagram is taking notes. Over the coming months, Instagram plans to experiment with ways to embrace full-screen, immersive, mobile-first video. They also will be experimenting in the space of "recommendations" - which means showing you posts and topics on your feed that you might not be following... yet. This is incredibly similar to how both TikTok and YouTube operate, where the user experience is much more about discovering new people and brands than it is about just following your favorites.

This emphasis on video might come as a shock to the aesthetically-pleasing selfie aficionados that flood our Instagram feeds, but could it be an opportunity for creators and businesses everywhere? We think it absolutely could be.
